DR. SUBODH KANDAMUTHAN

CURRENT POSITION

Dr. Subodh Kandamuthan is the Director and Professor of the Dr. Kakarla Subba Rao Centre for Healthcare Management at ASCI, Hyderabad, and Dean of Training Programmes (Long Duration). He has been the Programme Director of the AICTE-approved Post Graduate Diploma in Hospital Management (PGDHM) for the last seven years.

He teaches Health Economics, Health Policy, Public Health, Health Insurance, and Business Research Methods for the PGDHM programme, and has also taught at the University of Hyderabad, NIMS, Chitkara University, Indian Institute of Public Health, and LV Prasad Eye Institute. He also takes sessions at NIRD, IIT Hyderabad, TISS Hyderabad, and Dr. MCRHRD Institute.

He is currently team leader for the UNICEF project on Concurrent Monitoring of Anemia Mukt Bharat in Telangana, and Programme Director of an online six-month Certificate Programme on Health Insurance in collaboration with Access Health International and InOrder Institute.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

Dr. Kandamuthan holds a Ph.D. in Health Economics from the Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore, an M.Phil in Applied Economics from the Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram (affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru University), and an MS in Development Economics from Pondicherry Central University.

He has received international fellowships including the Australia India Council Research Fellowship (2004) and the US Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Programme on American Think Tanks (2014), where he visited think tanks across eight states of the United States. He won the IDRC Social Science Research Award in December 2009 in the category of Equity in Health.

PAST EXPERIENCE

Prior to joining ASCI, Dr. Kandamuthan worked as faculty in Health Economics at the Institute of Economic Growth, New Delhi, and the Institute of Health Systems, Hyderabad. He also served as Technical Consultant for DFID in Finance and Procurement to the Health Department of the Government of Andhra Pradesh.

He has worked on projects for the World Bank, WHO, UNICEF, Ministry of Commerce (GoI), DoPT, and state governments of Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh β€” covering economic costing, health programme evaluation, medium-term health expenditure frameworks, trade in health services, and public-private partnerships in health. He has represented India and ASCI at the World Think Tank Summit in Yokohama, Japan (2017), and delivered invited talks in South Africa, CΓ΄te d’Ivoire, Japan, and Tunisia.

CURRENT INTERESTS

His current areas of interest are Health Economics β€” particularly Health Expenditure and Costing Analysis, Cost of Illness, Drug Procurement, and Public-Private Partnerships in Health. He is actively engaged in health financing, health insurance, monitoring and evaluation, and policy advisory work for state and national health programmes.

PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS

Dr. Kandamuthan has been a Technical Committee Member of the Mobile Health Technical Advisory Group of the World Health Organisation. He has been invited as an expert on Public-Private Partnerships in Health by the African Development Bank for workshops across African countries, and has facilitated an MoU with the State Health Authority Kerala for year-long online training on Health Economics, Health Financing, and Health Insurance.
